April 11 - On Our Way
We had a pretty civilized start to this trip. Karen and Joan (along with chauffeur Paul) were due to pick me up at 10am. So, after finishing last minute chores, I sat down to check email one last time. First one was from Westjet, entitled "Important changes to your upcoming WestJet flight". This is what I feared - flight crew sickness, or something else causing last minute changes to our flights which would then wreak havoc with connections across the pond. The gist of the message was that due to flight schedule changes the flight was cancelled and they had no other options to offer at this time. What??? They failed to specify which flight it was that they were talking about (other than referencing a reservations code) so it took me a minute or two to come to the realization that it wasn't today's flight but rather a June flight to Indianapolis. Whew!! Heart attack averted......
We were early to the airport and apparently missed the earlier rush so it was pretty darned quiet. We were quickly processed through all the checkpoints and then had lots of time to take a lonnnng walk through the airport. I must say - it's a pretty nice airport, airy, and they've established some nice "spaces" including a yoga/stretching/lounging area and lots of little "campfire" and other interesting sitting areas.
Big plane for a domestic flight, but then Toronto is the centre of the universe, and Easter is next weekend. I lucked out, though. An empty seat beside me. Flying over the first three provinces really drove home the fact that we haven't had any moisture in a very, very long time. Brown, brown, brown. Then over northern Ontario (although technically we were in US airspace) the ground was white. Hopefully the last time I see that for many months. A bit of rain in Toronto. Everything on schedule so far and we met our fourth, Fran, at the gate. Onward..............
